Using the LPI in OrganizationsLeadership potential assessment
The Leadership Potential Indicator (LPI) is a self-report questionnaire covering 20 management and leadership competencies. Use its structured feedback to explore leadership strengths, focus development and inform coaching and succession discussions.
The LPI provides structured feedback for selection, coaching, learning and development.
Use the LPI in leadership selection, succession planning, assessment centers, coaching and structured leadership-development programs.
Using the LPI in OrganizationsExplore your leadership strengths, preferred styles and development priorities across the complete leadership cycle.
Take the LPI — £25LPI provides a consistent framework for exploring how people approach leadership. Relate the profile to the responsibilities of the role and examples from the participant’s experience.
Explore strengths and development needs across the leadership cycle. Use the findings to select learning goals, stretch assignments and opportunities to practice.
Compare the profile with the demands of a future role. Combine questionnaire findings with performance history, structured interviews and relevant assessment exercises.
Use the report to discuss direction, communication, influence and delivery. Ask for workplace examples and turn the discussion into a small number of practical development goals.
LPI asks participants how far they agree with statements about their own competencies. Scores describe their self-reported profile relative to the comparison group; they are not direct observations of performance or a guarantee of success in a future role.
Define the leadership requirements first. Use LPI alongside other relevant evidence rather than applying a universal score threshold to label someone a high-potential employee or make a promotion decision.
Explore the participant’s examples, context and goals. Agree actions that can be practiced and reviewed, rather than assuming that a score alone establishes a strength or limitation.
Understand capabilities related to strategic thinking, analysis, creativity and vision.
Explore communication, influence, support and the ability to build commitment.
Examine planning, execution, resilience and continuous improvement.
The LPI follows the leadership cycle from creating direction through engaging people to successful delivery.
Scores should be considered together and interpreted in relation to the person’s role, goals and circumstances. A high or low result is not automatically a strength or limitation.
The structured report combines accessible results with practical interpretation for participants and practitioners.
The supplied LPI User Manual documents the framework, norms, scale reliability and validity studies. These summaries describe that evidence and its limits; suitability should be considered for the intended role and population.
The questionnaire uses self-ratings on a five-point agreement scale. It reports 20 competencies across four leadership functions, with scores compared to an international reference group.
The manual describes a norm dataset of 20,000 cases with equal numbers of men and women, selected from over 28,000 online test takers. The incidental sample includes individual customers and corporate assessment participants; it is not a representative UK workforce sample.
The manual reports a median scale reliability of 0.71 using Cronbach’s alpha. Reliability varies by scale; Table 10 provides individual coefficients and measurement-error estimates.
The manual examines relationships with other leadership measures and with self-assessed job performance. Associations based on self-report should not be treated as independent proof that LPI predicts future executive success. See Chapter 5 for methods and results.
After receiving the report, participants and practitioners can use ChatGPT or another capable generative AI tool to explore the findings conversationally.
The LPI report remains the primary source. AI does not score the questionnaire, conduct a new assessment or replace the participant’s experience, relevant context and professional judgment. Output should always be checked against the report.

Organizations, HR practitioners and coaches can use LPI in leadership development, coaching, assessment centers and succession planning. Individuals can also purchase it to explore their own leadership profile.
LPI can contribute to a high-potential assessment process by providing structured information about self-reported competencies. It should be combined with role requirements, performance evidence and other assessment methods; it does not conclusively identify future leaders on its own.
Neither. LPI is a self-report questionnaire using agreement ratings. It does not test performance on ability tasks or collect coworker ratings. TSQ is the separate 360 degree feedback survey in the MySkillsProfile portfolio.
The questionnaire typically takes 10–15 minutes. Allow additional time to read the feedback report and discuss the results with a coach or practitioner.
The report includes an overall leadership-potential result, four leadership-function scores, profiles of 20 competencies, leadership-style indicators and development guidance. The sample report shows the format before you purchase.
An individual assessment costs £25, including the personal report. Standard organizational prices range from £25 to £10 per assessment depending on quantity; the full bands are displayed above.
Relate the profile to the specific role, explore workplace examples and combine it with interviews and other relevant evidence. Avoid using a questionnaire score as the sole basis for a hiring or promotion decision.
